The word "gestalt" is a German term meaning, loosely, "whole" or "form." It is an idea that views every individual as a blend of the mind, emotions, physical body, and soul with unique experiences and realities.
Gestalt therapy focuses on the use of empathy and unconditional acceptance in the 'here and now'' during a session, rather than on past experience, or 'content' As an existential, psychodynamic approach, Gestalt Therapy helps individuals overcome distress by learning how to trust and accept what they feel and experience in the present moment in the context of their lives right now. Through this process of heightened self-awareness, transformation can occur. We call this 'the paradoxical theory of change'.
Gestalt counselling is a personally tailored process. It involves talking through your unique concerns in a safe way. The job of the counsellor assists you to become aware of the subtler messages of your inner world and will utilise specialised strategies in your session to heighten your experience of yourself and your world. For example, making conscious the link between your emotions, body movements and sensations.
During therapy, you will learn to use these techniques yourself to be able to use them for self-support the rest of your life. Gestalt therapy supports lifelong growth and change by unblocking where you are emotionally, mentally or physically stuck.

Gestalt therapy is a form of counselling founded in the 1940’s by Fritz Perls. It was a radical

Your counselling sessions will be enriched and supported by my many years of experience as a trained Gestalt therapist. Throughout your counselling journey you will be helped to:
- Deepen and expand your awareness in the present moment, to become more attentive to what you are feeling and thinking, right now. This approach has become widely appreciated in recent years through the growth of mindfulness techniques.
- Discover how your present experience has emerged from the broader context of your life, especially in the way that you shape, and are being shaped by, your environment.
- Appreciate both the uniqueness of your perceptions and your interconnectedness with the world in which you live.
- Become better able to take responsibility for your life and your choices.
- Attain improved physical health because of renewed emotional wellbeing.
